So let’s now talk about Honesty, not
Hollywood hype! I’ve worked and
completed 36 years of published film
reviewing experience, 30 with the Maine
Sunday Telegram and Portland Press
Herald. 5000 film viewings, over 3500
reviews. And what do I look for? What
else?
Simply what entertains my
readers. No nonsense here. I
don’t write for editors. I don’t write
for other film critics. Hey, … words
better have meaning for you, or forget
it. A review should be about the film,
not about me. |

Marty's Criteria
What makes a film quality entertainment?
A good story? Uh,
uh. No more so than you care about the
reply when you’re introduced to a new
person and you ask, “What do you do?” In
a minute you realize that really what
you’re looking for in a new person is an
appealing personality. So, in a film,
you’re really looking for its
“personality,” communication at your
deep, meaningful levels of
consciousness. In a well-designed movie
that means
integrated action,
suspense, acting from the inside and
settings artistry.
At the
deeper levels of mind and spirit, we
respond to the audio and visual energy
of smart dynamic film technique and
atmosphere, whether fast-paced or
deliberative --
DELIVERY!
If it all works for you, you’ve got
something to take away! It was
entertaining. You have grown.
I’ll tell you about the plot, of course,
and in the way I tell it, you’ll sense
my estimate of the film. |
Summary:
Intelligence ... clever drama or comedy
... performance power ... appropriate
film octane level. Does it have it? |
A good movie
moves — you even more than itself.
How much did the film take on as a
challenge? Did it pick up its point and
run with it? Did you care about it?
Does the director know we’re here
watching? Are we being respected?
Or are we being jerked around?
And . . . Is this film hitting us high –
or low?
Let’s do a review or two ...
